Lionel Worthing is a musical prodigy from a poor farming family in Kentucky. He possesses the ability to visualize sounds. Although David Smith was orphaned at one point in his childhood, he comes from a more privileged background under the guardianship of an uncle in Newport. The two students at a music conservatory in New England first meet in a bar in 1917. It is their shared love of folk music that initially draws them together, a connection that eventually becomes romantic and sexual. While the Great War separates them, they are reunited after the war when David, working as a researcher at a college in Augusta, Massachusetts, asks Lionel, who has returned to the family farm in the intervening years, to accompany him on a months-long project to collect folk songs in rural New England. The question arises: what will happen to their relationship once the project is completed, knowing only what each has revealed about the other's hopes and dreams during their limited time together? Although both probably believe that working on this project was the happiest of their lives, Lionel is thinking about a traditional family life with a wife and children, while David has his own, more hidden problems outside of their time together.
